Careers Advice and Guidance

Childcare and Early Years Career Progression

What options are available to me when I complete a Level 2 qualification in Childcare/Early Years?

Level 2 qualifications allow progression on to the Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other relevant Level 3 qualifications relating to early years and child care.

Learners may work under supervision in a variety of roles such as:

  • Nursery Practitioner
  • Classroom Assistant
  • Pre-school Practitioner
  • Playgroup Assistant
  • Childcare Worker

Salaries for a Level 2 qualified position range between £14k pa to £24k pa. Typical working hours are 38 – 40.

What options are available to me when I complete a Level 3 qualification in Childcare/Early Years?

On completion of a Level 3 apprenticeship or Level 3 qualification, learners will be able to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators. Learners can also progress onto the Level 5 Early Years Senior Practitioner qualification.

Level 3 qualified roles can include: 

  • Nursery Worker/Supervisors
  • Nursery Nurses
  • Nursery Teaching Assistants
  • Early Years Workers/Assistants
  • Nursery Practitioners
  • Classroom Assistants
  • Care Workers/Assistants
  • Assistant Youth Supporters
  • Assistant Childcare Worker
  • Community Workers

The average salary for a Level 3 qualified Room Leader is £28k pa (Experienced)

Typical working hours each week are 35-40. You could expect to occasionally work evenings and early mornings.

What options are available to me when I complete a Level 5 qualification in Childcare/Early Years?

Upon successful completion of a Level 5 apprenticeship or Level 5 qualification, learners can work as an Early Years Senior Practitioner within the Early Years Workforce across the private, voluntary and independent sector or progress to Higher Education in a relevant subject area.

This qualification is suitable for learners already working in the early years sector in a managerial role, as well as learners that may wish to develop their career or increase their understanding through professional development. Learners undertaking the qualification would be working in job roles such as:

  • Manager
  • Deputy Manager
  • Room Leader/Supervisor
  • Leader with designated area of responsibility.

The average salary for an experienced Level 5 qualified Nursery Manager is  £32k pa. Typical working hours each week is 35-40. You could occasionally work evenings and early mornings.

Hairdressing and Barbering Career Progression

What options are available to me when I complete a Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing or Barbering? 

Learners who complete a Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing or Barbering are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Hairdresser (SRH) with The Hairdressing Council. Learners may also progress onto a Level 3 qualification.

Career opportunities as a stylist exist in a variety of contexts, including:

  • Commercial salons
  • Specialist African type hair salons
  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
  • Product manufacturing and training
  • Television, film, theatre and media
  • Hospitals/care homes

What options are available to me when I complete a Level 3 qualification in Hairdressing or Barbering? 

Learners who achieve this qualification are able to work as Creative Hair Stylists, Advanced Senior Stylists and/or Specialist Technicians.

Learners could work in a variety of different sectors, which may include:

    • Commercial salons
    • Senior stylist/manager
    • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based salon settings
    • Product manufacturing
    • Training/teaching within private centres/colleges
    • Cruise liners
    • Film and Television stylist
