Apprenticeships

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is the best way for individuals and employed staff to gain a recognised suite of professional qualifications whilst working. An Apprenticeship combines a job (16 hours or above in certain circumstances) with a structured training programme leading to nationally recognised qualifications and a prestigious English Apprenticeship certificate.

The training is either fully or partially funded by the Government through the Education and Skills Funding Agency with a small co-investment from employers.

In short, apprenticeships can give you the skills, knowledge and behaviours to build a successful career in a supportive and practical setting.

Why become an apprentice?

  • Apprenticeships allow people aged 16+ to achieve qualifications whilst working and earning money. That means you won’t have any student loan to pay off and you will be earning money whilst you learn.
  • Apprenticeships typically last between 12 and 24 months and unlike college or university, there generally are not many qualification- based entry requirements.
  • Apprentices learn in a supportive and highly skilled working environment. Learning on and off the job means they are surrounded by industry experts. They also have expert apprenticeship Tutors to go to for support and guidance.
  • Apprentices often have more career progression opportunities as they already have experience in their sector.
  • An Apprenticeship Standard consists of a job-relevant set of knowledge, skills and behaviours. For the Level 2 and 3 Apprenticeship in Childcare and the Level 3 Youth Worker and Level 4 Children, Young People and Families Practitioner apprentice these are further enhanced through the completion of a Diploma.

Apprentices are hardworking, determined and passionate about what they do. You will need to juggle study time, assignments and exams, with a paid job.

Apprenticeships are an opportunity for individuals of all ages to earn a wage whilst they learn, and to build confidence in their workplace whilst pursuing their chosen career path. Watch a video interview with one of our childcare apprentices, Olivia here

Think about the following questions:

  1. Do you work better in a hands-on, practical environment?
  2. Is your chosen career something you need a real work environment to really learn?
  3. Did you struggle in a classroom environment and feel you need a more diverse setting to learn in?
  4. Do you want to go straight into working at least 30 hours per week?

If the answer to those questions is yes, then taking on an apprenticeship almost certainly the best route for you. Check out our range of apprenticeships and diplomas here.

Apprenticeships can be offered to anyone who meets the right criteria. There is no upper age limit.

Apprentices must be aged 16+, not currently undertaking another funded programme of learning, employed a minimum of 16 hours per week, currently a resident in England, a resident in the UK for the last 3 years (unless exempt) and must have the right to live and work in the UK. Even if you already have a degree level qualification, you are eligible to undertake an apprenticeship as long as you are learning new and different skills.
